OtolaryngologyThe technique of FNA involves several fairly discrete steps:
- The identification of a mass lesion with appropriate clinical indications for aspiration. Clinical history is paramount.
- The introduction of a small gauge needle (23- 27g) attached to a syringe into the lesion.
- The application of negative pressure while oscillating as well as directing and re-directing the needle through the lesion.
- Preparation and staining of obtained material.
- Microscopic evaluation.
- Reporting of the results.
This course contains one video file which is audio only. There is a separate attachment of a printable PDF file of the power point slides to follow along and make notes.
Learning Objectives
Review some of the more common indications for FNA/Core Biopsy of the Head and Neck.
Go over some of the common FNA/Core Biopsy diagnoses of the Head and Neck.
Discuss limitations of fine needle aspiration.
Explain options for how specimens can be triaged for ancillary tests.
